What was that show called?

I need help, there was this show on either abc,nbc,or cbs with a man who was immortal and he lived throughout American history. He's kind of a detective or lawyer I think, in the past he dated this black woman when segregation was legal or something and years later he has a black son who now is in his 40s or 50s. I used to watch this show in I think it came on in 2008 or earlier. If you know the name of this show please help me and thanks!
