What just happened??????

Me and my bf have dated for a month and a half and hes such a sweetheart...but we went to the movies together and after we walked to the fountain by the theatre and his ride was waiting around the corner and he hugged me and held me there then asks (thats it?) (btw weve never kissed yet) then i said ya...and he got up and slowly started walking away. I knew he was upset so i grabbed his hand and was gonna pull him in for a small kiss but he let go....? Idk what happened...we texted later that night and i said sorry and he said its not a big deal...besides it was the both of us not just you...idk how to react to what happened? What coulda been going through his mind? Help :(
